Seaweeds are among the world’s largest untapped resource. Norway’s seaweed forest constitutes 80 % of the coastal biomass with a standing stock estimated to 50 million tons. However, in order to utilize seaweeds effectively it is necessary to use a technology which exploits the entire biomass – a biorefinery. Alginor plans to start up the first biorefinery in Norway focusing on total (i.e. 100 %) utilization and resource efficient processing of seaweeds to pure and formula-specific products for use in food, feed, pharma, agri, chemicals and materials. The biorefinery will be in the form of a Demonstration unit with a tentative production capacity of 5,000 tons of seaweed per year. Further, Alginor plans a new expansion to a full-scale industrial Biorefinery with an annual production capacity of 50,000 tons of seaweed per year. More
