Bakersfield’s standard associate’s degree programs are categorized to help students clarify their career and academic interests. That is, majors are grouped together under general areas of interest such as business and management, health services, public services and the arts, helping students to narrow down their options... based on their interests. Based on the subject area, Bakersfield’s degrees either prepare you for a career or for a transfer to a four-year university. Beyond these programs, Bakersfield has many other offerings such as classes specifically designed for students aged 55 years and over. Other programs include a learning resource center, which provides basic skills instruction in English and math as well as workforce preparation. Bakersfield also offers career and academic preparation for high school students as well as for those who are unemployed or facing financial challenges. Probably one of its most outstanding student life offerings is Bakersfield’s award-winning student newspaper. In addition, there are a host of academic, political, artistic, social and environmental student clubs and organizations. Bakersfield has an open admissions policy. However, certain programs, such as the one in registered nursing, have additional requirements and a separate application. Tuition is significantly lower for California state residents and for non-residents who attended high school in California.
