CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF KOREA
The Catholic University of Korea traces its roots to the introduction of Catholicism in Korea. Catholicism was first introduced to Korea in the latter half of the 18th century when Silhak(Practical Learning) scholars of the late Joseon dynasty began to study the new religion from Catholic books. They formed a Catholic community of faith devoted to recruitment and education. Established in 1855 in Baeron, Jechon, Chungcheongbuk-do, St. Josephโs Seminary was the first occidental-style education... al institution in Korea that, in the spirit of spreading human dignity, taught Chinese literature, Latin, philosophy, and theology. St. Josephโs Seminary was the birthplace of the Catholic University of Korea with a rich history in theology studies. With one of the best medical schools in the nation and 8 affiliate hospitals and with 40 years of cultivating future female leaders, St. Josephโs Seminary, the College of Medicine, and Songsim Womenโs University combined their strengths to form the Catholic University of Korea. Throughout the years, the Catholic University of Korea has played a major role in spreading the Catholic spirit of love for humanity in Korea and cultivating sincere intellects who respect life.
