Codexis creates its products by applying its CodeEvolver® directed evolution technology platform, which introduces genetic mutations into microorganisms. Codexis, Inc. began operations as an independent company in 2002, and became a publicly traded company in 2009. They are located in Redwood City, CA USA

Using this method, scientists genetically engineer genes, then screen the enzymes produced to see if it creates the properties needed for a specific reaction.
