For a two-year education with the quaintness of a small campus, but the resources for big thinking, there’s the Gogebic Community College in Ironwood, Michigan. Whether you want to transfer to a four-year program or gain occupational training to enter the workforce right away, Gogebic has programs for you. In spite of its size, the school allows students many opportunities to get involved in the real world. From debating health care with their congressman, receiving advice from a Coast Guard ... Rear Admiral or meeting with many legislators and people of influence, students have the resources for practical application of their education. Academics include associate’s degrees in a broad range of programs like business, arts/humanities and engineering, technical programs, and professional certificates/diplomas. The college has an active student life, providing students with many lounges and computer labs, nearby coffee shops and restaurants, the Lindquist Center gymnasium and even a disc golf course. Admissions are open, allowing any student with a high school diploma or GED and a proof of residency to attend. Tuition differs according to which county you’re from. Local residents have the lowest costs, other Michigan residents the second lowest, Wisconsin residents third lowest and out-of-state residents the fourth lowest. Students who complete the FAFSA application may be eligible for financial aid such as merit and need-based scholarships, federal grants and loans, or could partake in work-study programs.More
