Help for individuals available through
FEMA.
Three ways to apply:
- Online at DisasterAssistance.gov. This is the fastest and easiest way to apply.
- Through the FEMA App for mobile devices.
- By calling the FEMA helpline at 1-800-621-3362, 4 AM to 10 PM (PST). Help is available in most languages.

- Citizenship and immigration status requirements
- Help from Disaster Recovery Centers. They assist with:
- federal aid applications
- housing and rental support
- access to services
- Unemployment benefits: Apply if you lost your job due to the fires
- State tax relief for individuals and businesses affected by the fires.
- You can also get copies of your tax records and a one-month filing extension on your tax returns. Learn more at CDTFA.

Federal programs
There is a group of federal programs that help disaster survivors start to recover. It’s called Individual Assistance. These programs include:
- Advanced Financial Assistance
- Housing
- Rental Assistance
- Funds to repair or replace damaged homes
- Legal services
- Unemployment assistance
- Help with other needs
Food assistance
- For low-income women and children: WIC
- Sign up for CalFresh or have them replace food lost in the fires
- Food banks in your area
What to do when you’ve lost your home
Find shelter and get help
Real-time list of open shelters
FEMA offers help for temporary housing through their Individuals and Households Program. They offer displacement assistance of 14 days of housing for residents who qualify. You could also qualify for several months of rental assistance.
File an insurance claim
Know your protections. California protects you from losing your home insurance if you were impacted by these fires.
Get help with your claim. The California Department of Insurance gives help in many languages.

- In-person: Go to insurance workshops the weekends of January 18 and January 25.
Replace documents
Driver’s license, ID cards, and vehicle titles: The DMV can help you get replacements.

Birth, death, and marriage records: You must contact the county recorder where the event occurred.

Manufactured and mobile homes: Help with replacing titles and registration
Rebuild - faster
Governor Newsom suspended permit and review requirements under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and the California Coastal Act. This allows victims of the recent fires to restore their homes and businesses faster.

Major Disaster Declaration
On January 8, California got a Major Disaster Declaration for the California wildfires. This lets federal agencies give aid and resources for recovery in the affected areas.
Through this declaration from President Biden, California gets assistance for:
- individuals,
- the public, and
- small businesses.
