Somru BioScience
For over a decade, Somru BioScience has been working to make life-saving treatment options more accessible. The family-owned biotech company based in Prince Edward Island is making a name for itself in the industry by offering innovative and affordable research and development solutions for pharmaceutical companies.
Somru was founded in 2012 by Mohammed Moin, Dihan Ahsan, and Rafiq and Clarinda Islam. After graduating from the University of Prince Edward Island with a computer science degree in 2005, Moin decided to stay on the Island to work in the province’s flourishing startup sector. His family’s experience navigating the health care system after his father’s cancer diagnosis inspired Moin and his brother Rafiq to dedicate their careers to making life-saving drugs, like those used in their father’s treatment, more accessible. They have since built one of the Island’s leading bioscience companies.
Somru utilizes proprietary technology to develop innovative antibodies for research, diagnostics, and therapeutic applications. The company offers quality reagents for a variety of applications, biosimilar research and development services, and "ready-to-use" kits for detection of drug and anti-drug antibodies.
A tight-knit community and access to government support were key motivators for Moin’s family to build Somru here in Atlantic Canada. Through Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), the Government of Canada has helped Somru continue its groundbreaking work. Most recently, a combined investment of nearly $2 million has supported the company’s expansion to meet increasing market demand. Somru’s new Contract Research Organization (CRO) division will provide clients with a more cost-effective solution for clinical trials and will create 65 new full-time jobs by 2025.
Somru Bioscience Inc. is a prime example of how innovation and resourcefulness fuel Atlantic Canada’s economy.
