  • “I do not understand what is going on with me” is the most frequent response psychologists hear from women who, during the war, are forced to manage their household and raise children alone while their husbands are on the front line or killed in action. Being face-to-face with the bulk of responsibilities, trying to fit them in all in a 24-hour day and serving as the primary support system for children and elderly family members, Ukrainian women are struggling to manage emotions that have come up during this yearslong conflict — exhaustion, apathy and overwhelm being at the top of the list. Olena and Eugenia are two psychologists who were hired by Civic Initiatives of Ukraine (CIU) to provide training in art therapy techniques for working with this specific population. Learn how CIU, under the USAID - Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance Community-Led Emergency Action and Response (CLEAR) 2 program funded by the United States Agency for International Development’s Bureau, is creating safe spaces for women: https://bit.ly/3BUy1O9

  • Access to clean and safe sanitation supports good health, but it also has economic benefits too! In Ghana, for example, thanks to new water systems and sanitation facilities, families stay healthier and are then able to to work more effectively and contribute more fully to the economy. Around the world, we work to advance the goal of universal access to clean water and sanitation, and help build strong local systems that link communities and households to sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene services.

  • In December 2024, Pamoja Tuwalishe, Tanzania's largest USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS)-funded school meals program implemented by Global Communities, showcased its impact at the 24th Global Child Nutrition Forum (GCNF) in Osaka, Japan. The event brought together over 400 government, NGO, private sector, research and academic stakeholders from 84 countries to discuss innovations in child nutrition through school meal programs. Dr. Wilson Mahera highlighted Tanzania's efforts in enhancing collaboration among local governments, schools, and communities to improve educational outcomes and nutritional standards. The forum emphasized the importance of multi-sectoral collaboration, dedicated government financing, and active community participation in fostering resilient school feeding systems. Key recommendations included: 🔄 Establishing community-led processing facilities to boost local food production. 🧑🌾 Using school meal programs to drive agricultural transformation. 🍲 Ensuring budget allocations for school feeding programs. 🌍 Recognizing school meals as a strategic approach to transform food systems. The insights shared at the #GCNForum2024 reaffirmed the progress made in improving school meal program quality and underscored the need for sustainable systems to consistently deliver nutritious food to school children. • “In conflict settings, it is critical for us, humanitarians, to engage in dialogues with leaders on both sides of the conflict and assure them of our commitment to neutrality. We have to explain that our mission is solely to deliver humanitarian aid. That we will not take sides, and we will not discriminate against people based on which side of the conflict they are on,” says Will Musombi, our Senior Advisor for Humanitarian Response. In times of conflict, the safety and respect of relief personnel and their missions are paramount. Their unwavering commitment to neutrality and impartiality ensures that aid reaches those in need, regardless of their affiliation. • “While the humanitarian principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality and independence are well-defined by the international community, there are still tensions and misconceptions about their practical application,” says Jasper Vaughn, Communication and Information Management Officer who sits on our Humanitarian Response Team. “Humanitarian actors must constantly think how to preserve their independence and neutrality in very complex situations.” The risks and challenges to principled humanitarian action vary from context to context, but they may include: ▶️ Politicization of aid ▶️ Interference and pressure from local actors to select certain recipients over others ▶️ Bureaucratic impediments and restrictions on access to populations in need ▶️ Aid diversion or challenging donor restrictions to delivering aid ▶️ Attacks on humanitarian convoys and aid workers Read an article from our experts to learn about these risks and how Global Communities is addressing them: https://bit.ly/3VIIO51
