Today was a #bucketlist day! Thanks to Headspace and Nasdaq - both members of One Mind at Work - I had the honor of joining for the ringing of Nasdaq's opening bell. Not so long ago, mental health would not be mentioned when we talked about wellness at work. This year, Nasdaq opened wellness week with a focus on mental health. Wow!! Congratulations to Jansen Weaver, Nicolette T., Eve Lewis Prieto and everyone at Headspace for helping Nasdaq launch wellness week with Eve's centering moment of mindfulness and reminder to pause, reflect, reset, and celebrate! Thank you for the invitation to join you. Cannot think of a better way to start the new year! #WellnessWeek #mentalhealth #mindfulness #workplacementalhealth One Mind, One Mind at Work

🌟 Driving Workplace Mental Health Forward in Japan 🇯🇵 We recently had the privilege of co-hosting the Workforce Mental Health and Well-Being Event at the Hotel Okura in Tokyo, alongside Columbia University, Heidrick & Struggles Japan, and Pasona N A, Inc. This event marked the inaugural launch of our Japan Leadership Coalition on Mental Health. With 60+ senior leaders, including CHROs, related senior executives, and in-house industrial doctors from 50+ companies, the event provided an invaluable platform to address the growing importance of workplace mental health in Japan. Thank you to Steven G. (Greenberg), Partner-in-Charge, Japan, of Heidrick & Struggles Japan, and Kenji Furushiro, President & CEO of Pasona NA, Inc., for co-hosting this important event with us. 👥 Key Highlights: 🔹 Kathleen M. Pike, CEO of One Mind and Director of Columbia University’s Mental Health + Work Design Lab, emphasized the urgent need for a scientific, strategic, and community-driven approach to mental health, particularly in addressing the challenges facing Japanese organizations. 🔹 Dr. Tsuyoshi Akiyama, President of the World Federation for Mental Health, encouraged a shift in mindset, urging us to view employees with mental health challenges as valuable assets, not burdens. 🧠 Key Messages Communicated: 🔹 The Importance of Strategic Approaches: Kathy emphasized the need for a strategic, scientific, and comprehensive approach to workplace mental health, focusing on the urgent challenges faced by Japanese organizations. 🔹 The 3 Ps Framework: Kathy shared the 3 Ps Framework of Protection, Promotion, and Provision. The most effective workplace strategies will address mental health across this continuum. 🔹 Challenges in Japan's Workforce: Japan is grappling with a shrinking workforce, low employee engagement (only 6%), and annual economic losses of ¥6 trillion due to mental health-related issues. While 63.4% of companies are taking action, only 26% have formal strategies in place, and preventive measures are underutilized by 65%. 🔹 Mental Health as an Asset: Dr. Akiyama presented the Industrial Mental Health framework, urging a shift in mindset to view employees with mental health challenges as valuable assets rather than burden. 💬 Introducing the Japan Leadership Coalition on Mental Health We are excited to officially launch the Japan Leadership Coalition on Mental Health, a collaborative initiative uniting leading Japanese business leaders and corporations to prioritize mental health and well-being in the workplace. This coalition brings together forward-thinking leaders committed to improving mental health across their organizations and supporting Japanese workers and their families. Co-Founder, Chief Advocacy & Engagement Officer at One Mind | Advancing neuropsychiatric research, driving better care for mental health, leading patient-centered services, & dismantling discrimination through media.

I typically start my public talks with the statement, “All people facing psychosis deserve the chance to thrive—why isn’t that the common outcome?!” As I observed at Students With Psychosis‘s 2024 conference, that outcome may soon become much more common! The members of this wonderful organization prove that with courage and perseverance, meaningful lives and careers can be within reach not just despite but even because of one’s mental health condition. I intend in my role at One Mind to accelerate this process at scale! I am grateful to have received SWP’s 2024 Innovation Award and to have learned so much this weekend. Thanks to Cecilia McGough , Emeka Chima and Rei Scott for hosting this inspiring event. My top four takeaways: 1. Notwithstanding popular prejudices, people with psychosis are highly worthy human beings who deserve opportunities to grow as members of their communities and society. 2. For people with psychosis to advance their careers, advocacy and education initiatives must drive universities and employers to improve their cultures and compliance with ADA policy. 3. Educational initiatives by forward-thinking universities (such as Stanford University School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School‘s anti-stigma courses) and industry which partner with people with lived experience (PWLE) show promise to begin to drive societal improvements. 4. Among the best educational practices to dissolve social stigma are meaningful personal interactions with PWLE and their stories, role-playing exercises teaching the effects of stigma on individuals, and immersive projects to design anti-stigma interventions.
