The Open Data Institute works with companies and governments to build an open, trustworthy data ecosystem
About us
The ODI is a non-profit company, founded in 2012 by inventor of the web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, and AI expert, Sir Nigel Shadbolt, and headquartered in King’s Cross, London, UK. Our mission is to work with companies and governments to build an open, trustworthy data ecosystem. We want a world where data works for everyone. To do this, we work with businesses, governments, research organisations, public bodies, civil society, and philanthropic and other grant-giving organisations. THE WORK WE DO The ODI operates as an institute, and we also undertake commercial work that advances our mission. Our operating costs are met through a range of grants and commercial revenue. Our work includes applied research; consultancy services; training; and providing free reports, tools and webinars. We focus our efforts in three broad areas: 1. Improving the data practices of organisations so that they can build and manage adequate data infrastructure and data use 2. Tackling challenges so that the data ecosystem works better 3. Gathering and creating research, evidence and knowledge about data and the benefits of open, trustworthy data access, to inform companies and policymakers as they create data infrastructure, assets, practices and policies. If you’d like to help us advance this work, we'd love to hear from you – please get in touch at info@theodi.org

We recently published our AI Data Transparency Index. As developers frequently fail to disclose details of their training datasets, transparency practices vary significantly, ranging from widespread opacity to clear and detailed disclosures. This inconsistency hampers efforts to ensure fairness, identify biases, and comply with regulations, leaving researchers, policymakers and the public unable to make informed decisions about AI systems or conduct large-scale comparative research. We hope the index will foster more meaningful and user-centric AI data transparency across the ecosystem. #data #AI https://hubs.li/Q031FvBr0

Despite broad agreement on the critical importance of data to AI development, attempts to understand and query this data are stilted by poor transparency practices. We've developed a new framework to analyse the maturity of model providers in providing the relevant information needed for meaningful transparency.
