🌿 We have recently announced the creation of the #Alliance for #Environmental #Bioremediation, the #ALL4BIOREM Cluster, in cooperation with five others #EUfunded projects. 💡 Together with MIBIREM, BIOSYSMO Project, Nymphe, EDAPHOS, and ISLANDR Horizon EU, we have been working to exchange #knowledge about innovative bioremediation techniques and solutions and to coordinate in the dissemination of the #results of our projects. 📽 Recently, we have been supported by the Horizon Results Booster for the creation of a common visual identity for our cluster. This resulted in a #video that introduces the concept of bioremediation and its benefits, and presents the members and the objectives of the cluster. 💻 Check it out on the SYMBIOREM Project Youtube channel⬇ https://lnkd.in/eh8A5jyE

Thrilled to share that our latest paper, "Nitrogen Management during Decarbonization," is now published in Nature Reviews Earth & Environment! 🎉 In this review, we explore how five major decarbonization strategies impact nitrogen use in agriculture-food-energy systems: 🌍 Reducing carbon-intensive fertilizer production 🌾 Growing plants for biofuels 💨 Using NH₃ (ammonia) as a carbon-free fuel 🌱 Sequestering carbon in agricultural soils 📈 Intensifying crop yields to minimize land-use change Our findings reveal that while these strategies hold promise for reducing carbon emissions, some may lead to an increase in nitrogen use—potentially exacerbating nutrient pollution and eutrophication in aquatic ecosystems. 🌊 It’s clear that more research is needed to align decarbonization with nitrogen management, ensuring both carbon and nitrogen benefits. 📰🌿New article on additionality in blue carbon ecosystems out now! An ongoing debate is whether organic carbon (OC) sequestered out within a blue carbon project that has been transported to its present location (allochthonous) should be counted as ‘additional’. To add to this debate we compared methodologies which we were able to find online, with particular focus on the VERRA, IPCC and BlueCAM methodologies, and reviewed the science underlying any approach to account for allochthonous OC. Our conclusion is that there are currently no robust scientific approaches to define an appropriate apportioning of allochthonous OC for discounting in the calculation of additionality in carbon projects 🌊. Join or share your poster at our workshop at TerraenVision! At #TerraenVision in #Valencia in July, we organize the Workshop 'Transition towards Circular Land and Soil Management'; Building networks, bringing together interests and coping with friction in regulation. In the Netherlands the executive agency of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, #Rijkswaterstaat, set up a national network with local authorities, industries, farmers and knowledge institutions on circular land and soil management. Within this network partners exchange knowledge and experiences, start projects together and develop tools to communicate and understand the drivers behind collaboration or the inhibitions to collaborate. These instruments help to find pathways towards cooperation fitting all the partners. An example of such a tool is the Social Readiness Level Instrument. Within this workshop we will share our experiences and show the working of the #SocialReadinessLevel instrument. We invite you to join us if you want you to learn about building a network with stakeholders, to find out about tools to share interests and prioritize joint activities. You are invited to try out some of the tools we developed and you get to know the do’s and don’ts in match making. We want to discuss with you how to overcome differences in interests and frictions in regulation in the field of circular land and soil management. If you have experiences in circular land and soil management yourself, we invite you to share your results or case study with a poster in this workshop. More inspiring news from the IMO-NORAD TEST Biofouling project as collaboration expands with the Maritime Technology Cooperation Centre of Asia (MTCC) Combatting ship hull biofouling is not just a serious ecological issue, it is also serious climate change challenge. Even a thin layer of slime or micro-fouling increases drag, reduces fuel efficiency and results in more GHG and particulate emissions. https://lnkd.in/gThcqJQz 🚢🔱🚢 #biofouling #maritime #emissions #shipsandshipping #greentech #climate #innovation #energy #robotics
