Based in Hainault, Essex, Kelvin Hughes is a successful world-leading manufacturer of marine radar and navigation systems, serving global naval and commercial markets. During my 10-year period there, we grew by a factor of three, improved from break-even to good profitability, and even won two Queen's Awards. Prior to joining Smiths in 1985, I was for 9 years Technical Director of Rupert Neve & Co Ltd in Melbourn, Cambridge, responsible for the design of large-scale high grade professional audio systems for recording, film and broadcasting studios. Key customers included the BBC, Sony, Toshiba and Lucasfilm. It was in collaboration with the BBC that we designed and built the world's first digital audio studio systems. I have lectured in electronics and acoustics at UMIST, Manchester, and wrote the successful textbook 'A Practical Introduction to Electronic Circuits', published by Cambridge University Press. MHJ
