This week was a special #milestone for #teamniricson as our team finished an inspection of a runway of the biggest airport in Canada, Toronto #Pearson International Airport #yyz During the inspection, Jon Woodward from CTV News covered the story and Niricson got featured on #CTVNewsToronto During the project, the team scanned the runway surface and is currently using its artificial intelligence to map various pavement distresses for a PCI. This new pavement assessment method will allow for reduced runway downtime, a complete assessment of the entire airfield, and an ability to track pavement conditions as they change over time. Also big shoutout to Daan for the interview! Special thanks to Mark and the Transport Canada - Transports Canada / Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, Greater Toronto Airports Authority, and UAV8 teams for your support. Airfield inspections have traditionally been time-consuming, costly, and prone to subjectivity. But with advanced technologies, there’s a better way forward. At Niricson, we’re helping airport authorities like Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA), Vancouver Airport Authority (YVR), ADM Aéroports de Montréal (YUL), and Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL), and other similar airports to improve pavement inspections and streamline their inspection processes with automated condition assessments. Our latest case study highlights how innovations like photogrammetry and ROVER are revolutionizing airfield maintenance by: - Delivering highly accurate PCI calculations with 100% surface coverage. - Enabling inspections during off-peak hours, with day and night capabilities, reducing operational disruptions and saving costs. With these advancements, airport authorities can confidently: - Track structural changes over time. - Minimize downtime. - Make proactive maintenance decisions. Meet Daniel Albu, Location Systems Lead at Niricson. From an early fascination with technology—taking apart VCRs, building go-carts, and experimenting with computers—Daniel's hands-on curiosity led him to a Mechatronics degree from the University of Victoria. This passion for innovation and problem-solving made Niricson the perfect fit, where he applies his technical expertise to advancing infrastructure safety, since joining in 2020. Recently, he spearheaded the integration of stereo cameras and Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) with GPS systems, using Kalman filters to improve path tracking in environments with low satellite visibility. This breakthrough drastically reduces manual post-processing and paves the way for fully automated data collection, enabling safer and more efficient infrastructure inspections. For Daniel, the most fulfilling part of his work is harnessing cutting-edge technology to create tangible impacts—enhancing safety, unlocking inaccessible data, and contributing to sustainability. His contributions embody Niricson’s commitment to innovation in infrastructure asset management. #TeamNiricson #MakingInfrastructureSafer #InnovationInTech #LocationSystems

We had the great opportunity to present a paper titled “Cataract Dam and other spillway assets – Automated data-driven condition assessment of concrete assets using Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)” at the 2024 ANCOLD The Australian National Committee on Large Dams Inc. Conference in Adelaide, Australia. Harsh Rathod, Ph.D. , our Co-Founder & CEO, and Hetal Parmar, Manager, Asset Planning at WaterNSW, shared knowledge on how automated data-driven condition assessment of large concrete Dams can contribute significantly to leveraging asset data for planning long-term dam safety programs and optimizing capital spending. Here is a summary of the paper: Digital condition surveys are vital for asset owners, especially with aging dams where surveillance and maintenance are essential. While not all concrete issues affect dam safety, certain defects—such as joint spalling and slab offsets—can pose risks over time. In the case of large dams, conventional manual observation methods are impractical due to limitations in both size and accessibility. However, UAVs, in conjunction with AI processing, enable owners to swiftly and efficiently establish baseline data for future comparisons. The high-resolution data obtained empowers owners to make more informed decisions regarding their assets. Thank you to everyone who contributed to those meaningful discussions, and to industry leaders sharing knowledge to advance the future of dam management. Send us a message here to access the full paper or contact our team at https://hubs.la/Q02YfhmR0 for a deeper conversation regarding your asset. #ANCOLD2024 #InfrastructureSafety #Niricson #MakingInfrastructureSafer #WaterNSW
