Mission Statement

Traction Project identifies instances of gender injustice, and builds and supports community programs that model movements of change.

About This Cause

Traction Project was created to build community programs to solve gender-based injustices that are being overlooked by other organizations or otherwise marginalized. These programs are designed to be functioning models for movements that will extend beyond Traction Project’s immediate reach. Traction Project was founded in 2019 in San Francisco by a handful of community organizers who needed more tools and resources to help their communities. Our leadership is comprised of people who have been personally impacted by gender injustice, who wish to help others navigate their own circumstances. Traction Project is not interested in prioritizing problems based on their fundraising potential or other top-down priorities. Our method is to first identify an authentic need by talking to members of a community that has been marginalized by gender, and asking how they would solve their problem if they had more help. We choose how to invest ourselves based on efficient use of community resources, whether it can be replicated as a grassroots movement by other organizers, and the realistic worth for the people we are serving. Traction Project is most known for it's free LGBTQIA beginner-level martial arts classes, which focus on mixed grappling arts. Because it is so unique in the martial arts world to center trans people’s needs in a curriculum, Traction Project’s class guides are sampled and it's program regularly visited by LGBTQIA martial artists from around the world who are looking to build similar programs in their own locales.
