The eSports World Convention (formerly known as Electonic Sports World Cup until early 2016 [1]), often abbreviated to ESWC, is an international professional gaming championship. Every year winners of national qualifier event around the world earn the right to represent their country in the ESWC Finals. The event has won a lot of praise for its organisation and ability to put on a good show for spectators. The Counter-Strike 1.6 tournament was considered one of the Counter-Strike Majors from 2003 to 2011.
The ESWC was originally created by a French company called Ligarena who previously hosted smaller LAN events in France under the name of LAN Arena. In 2003 Ligarena decided to do something on a larger scale and the ESWC was born. In 2005, Ligarena became Games-Services.
In 2009, ESWC is bought by another French company called Games-Solution who became the owner of the brand until 2011. From then on, the brand has been the property of Oxent. The 4th October 2016, Webedia, one of the biggest media company in France - owner of Millenium and many leading websites in theirs domains (gaming, cinema, food, ...) - acquires Oxent. [2]
The grand finals and masters of ESWC have had a total prize purse of 1,721,000 € from 2003 till 2010. [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11]
In October 2023, the ESWC was acquired by the Esports World Cup Foundation.[12][13]
