In keeping with its core purpose, the Pittsburgh Platform has developed Green Communities Consulting (GCC), an education and training prototype focused on empowering marginalized communities, particularly communities of color. GCC is a public benefits corporation based in Pennsylvania. Its business model articulates opportunities for environmentally sustainable job and business creation, identified by gathering stories relevant to people’s lived experiences in their communities. The approach contrasts with traditional strategies that emphasize outside organizations’ attempt to convince disenfranchised populations of the need to create a sustainable environment. This project’s transformational idea is that the potential for economic uplift towards a sustainable future rest within the communities themselves – an idea long recognized but rarely implemented successfully. When fully developed, the Platform’s creative vision will lead to a social entrepreneurial corporation that matches communities needs and assets with the educational resources necessary to effect such positive social change.
