After 18 years of riding two wheels, a screw shook loose and I'm seriously thinking about a sidecar rig for my 2007 H-D FLHRS. I found out my dad is thinking about a hack for his Suzuki Burgman as well, so I'm considering making a Father's Day gift out of a good training class somewhere that will get us familiar with both the feel of a rig (so we know if we really want to commit to buying one) as well as how to ride one properly.

I really like the look of Adventure Sidecar's curriculum, particularly since we're both former BMW GS riders and the fact that so many recommend it. However, being that we're in the northern VA area, I'd like to know what's good and closer than Oregon. I found Shenandoah Harley Davidson has a course, purported to be "the sole state approved training program for side-cars and Trikes in Virginia" ( http://www.shenandoahhd.com/custompage.asp?pg=trike), but I can find little feedback on it.

I've been researching this for a while but I'm not quite finding what I'm looking for. What established courses are out there that you all recommend? I'll consider anything in the lower 48, but east of the Mississippi is preferable.

Thanks,

Tim

For specific class information you can go to the Evergreen saftey council which administers the S/tep prograhm for the entire USA. www.esc.org There is a class in VA, Vernons Adventure sidecar is perhaps the most fun as he trains on a grass field with enduro type sidecars.
I use to teach the class, it is well worth taking.
BTW, we have sidecars for your FLHRS our M72C or M72CX are the most popular and we do a lot of sidecars on the Burgman, our Kenna is the most popular for the Burgman.
If you want to give me a call I would be glad to talk with your about training and or sidecars.

Jay -

I see the pic of the Burgman & Kenna on your site - I'll let the old man know. I'm still not sure what model I'll zero in on, but I'll keep you in mind.

wv -

I'm familiar with the class in Woodbridge. Convenient yes, but not quite what I'm looking for. I'd like something with a little more flair that we could make a trip out of.

Our Velorex 562-563 models also fit up well with the Burgman & Silverwing scooters.

Hi mmmpies: Burgman's make great sidecar rigs -- a couple more examples are shown below.

Avanell from Texas has an Inder Rocket car mounted on her Burgman:

Jena's Burgman with a Texas Ranger sidecar. We have installed modified triple trees on Jena's to ease her steering effort, available from http://www.customtripletrees.com/TREES/SUZUKI/suzuki.html. And yes, it is faster than my Sportster rig Tongue out:

I ribbed my dad a lot when he stepped down to the Burgman since he went BMW K1200LT > R1200RT > Burgman. Seemed like an odd choice at the time, but it's easier on his old knees and I'm pretty impressed by how capable it is. Nonetheless, I can't help but chuckle a bit at the fact that each rider pictured above is a lady. πŸ™‚

I like the rocket car - reminds me of a late '60s BMW /2 with a Steib rig I was tempted to buy once upon a time.

I've yet to find a picture anywhere of an H-D FLHRS (Road King Custom) with a rig. Anybody have some of those?

One thing to note about how some of these sidecars have been mounted to the Burgman, It looks like "universal" type mounts were used and as such they all look like you can not move your foot up to the front of the floor board due to the upper front struts location.
With the mounting kit we make for the Burgman which uses no "Universal" type clamps the upper front strut is higher up and forward more so it is not in the way.

Thanks Lonnie, good stuff.

I was actually looking specifically for a rig on an RK Custom since it's got a clean, sort of stripped down look and I'm curious what others have done to follow that form. In general, I really like the look of the Liberty. The TLE gets lost on me...probably from seeing so many DC LEOs with them. Anyway, whatever I get I'm sure I'll end up ordering from an outfit ahead of time, then riding in to their shop to get the whole rig dialed in properly.

Send me a photo of your bike to jay@dmcsidecars.com and I will send you photo's of the closest bike to yours we have done. Having done thousands of sidecars chances are we have somthing similar. We usualy go with either our M72C or our M72CX on these bikes however we have also done our Kenna and several of the Champion sidecars. If you want to go more modern and a bit higher end the EZS sidecars also work out well.
