OIL SPILL RECOVERY INSTITUTE
Oil Spill Recovery Institute (OSRI) was created by Congress in 1989 after the Exxon Valdez oil spill. OSRI was established by the Oil Pollution Act of 1990. 1996 and 2004 amendments extended the original mandate through September 2012 and provided a funding mechanism for the Institute. Since 2005, the OSRI research program has been assured to continue for the duration of oil exploration and development in Alaska. OSRI is administered by and housed at the Prince William Sound Science Center, a non-profit educational and research organization located in Cordova. The PWS Science Center facilitates and encourages ecosystem research in the Greater Prince William Sound region.
