Openwave is a U.S.-based mobile data software and services company. The company operates as two separate entities; Openwave Mobility and Openwave Messaging. The company was founded in 1996 by Alain Rossman and was named Libris. The company was a pioneer in Handheld Device Markup Language, a precursor to WML. The company saw a period of high growth through a strategy of mergers and acquisitions. The company developed and supplied software infrastructure for mobile email applications and other multimedia messaging applications to mobile operators. The company was re-launched as two separate entities in 2012.
