Placentum Ltd is dedicated to the development of novel antioxidant formulations, discovered by researchers at the University of Bristol, which could revolutionise the prevention and treatment of pre-eclampsia. The idea that the health of the mother in pregnancy could have long term consequences for her offspring in terms of cardiac, respiratory and other diseases later in life was first described in epidemiological studies led by Professor D.J.P Barker at the University of Southampton in the e... arly 1990s. More recently, using modern technologies such as MRI, investigators have shown structural alterations in the brains of children whose mothers have suffered from pre-eclampsia during pregnancy. Researchers at the University of Bristol have, in a series of experiments, both in vivo and in vitro, demonstrated that the use of a novel antioxidant/nanoparticle combination can prevent the changes in the placenta seen in pre-eclampsia of pregnancy and neurological and cardiac complications in the offspring. The pharmaceutical product component has been investigated in a number of clinical trials where mitochondrial oxidative stress is thought to be part of the pathogenesis. The early evidence strongly suggests that the drug is safe in humans.
