SOUTHERN VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY

Southern Virginia University is a liberal arts college affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Though this affiliation is unofficial, the LDS ideology permeates university policy and student life. As a result, more than 95% of Southern Virginia students are Mormons. SVU’s academics are rooted in the liberal arts. The university intentionally offers fewer majors so that students can gain a broad and interdisciplinary educational foundation. The average class size is about 15 students, allowing for plenty of interaction and mutual support. The admissions process at Southern Virginia is fairly standard. Applicants must provide a completed application, official transcripts and ACT/SAT scores. Unlike many colleges, however, SVU also requires an ecclesiastical endorsement. The school follows a rolling admissions policy, so it’s best to apply early. Southern Virginia University provides extensive financial aid. Institutional merit scholarships range from $1,000 to $15,000.
