ST LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY

St. Lawrence University is a competitive private university in Canton, New York that offers a progressive environment and approach to learning. Academics at St. Lawrence are primarily focused on the liberal arts and sciences. Four-year degrees are offered in such fields as Anthropology, Environmental Studies, Fine Arts, Globl Studies, Neuroscience, Modern Languages, Religious Studies and Sociology. One of St. Lawerence’s more progressive academic offerings is the self-designed minor, which allows students, in collaboration with advisors, to create their own minor area or areas of study. St. Lawrence has a history of innovation: it claims to be the first university to have designed a first-year program, a multidisciplinary theme-based program for freshmen. Some of St. Lawrence’s housing options include sustainable, “green” cottages built by habitat for humanity. Some of these cottages were specificallly designed as safe havens for LGBT students, a population St. Lawrence has long supported in numerous ways. St. Lawrence is also governed by its students, with a group of elected students acting as liasions between student and faculty and staff. Student life at St. Lawrence is rich in creative arts offerings. A theatre, a fine art gallery and a performing arts center are just some examples. Additional student life options include athletic teams and student organizations. Admission to St. Lawrence is fairly competitive, with less than 40% of applicants getting accepted yearly. While the SAT scores of many admitted students are quite high, submission of such scores is optional.
