Stswecem'c Xget'tem First Nation practices forest thinning to protect grasslands, cultural burning, and biodiversity ranching, all of which reduce competition for overstory trees and increase light, soil moisture, and nutrients, thereby increasing biodiversity and ecosystem resilience while protecting the grassland's carbon sink. It will also provide co-benefits such as job possibilities and Indigenous participation in climate action, as well as increased ecosystem resilience and a lower risk of animals for residents.
