UNIVERSITY OF POITIERS
Fondée en 1431 par le pape Eugène IV, puis confirmée par les lettres patentes du roi Charles VII, l’Université de Poitiers compte dès l’origine cinq facultés : théologie, droit canon, droit civil, médecine et arts. Dès le xvie siècle, l’Université de Poitiers rayonne sur la vie culturelle de la ville. à cette époque, elle est citée comme la seconde université de France, après Paris ; 4 000 étudiants fréquentent l’université, dont certains deviendront célèbres : Joac... him du Bellay, Guez de Balzac, François Rabelais, René Descartes, Francis Bacon, Scévole de Sainte Marthe… Passée la Révolution, qui supprime les universités provinciales, l’Université de Poitiers renaît et s’enrichit de nouvelles facultés : lettres, sciences… L’Université de Poitiers rassemble actuellement plus de 27 000 étudiants et emploie plus de 3 000 personnes : enseignants et enseignants chercheurs / Bibliothécaires, ingénieurs, administratifs, techniciens, ouvriers, de service et de santé (BIATSS) / Attachés temporaires d’enseignement et de recherche (ATER) / lecteurs / maîtres de langues / contractuels doctorants / contractuels et vacataires.
