WORLD FOOD PROGRAMME
World Food Program is a humanitarian organization that addresses hunger worldwide. It is a part of the United Nations system and is voluntarily funded. The objectives of WFP are to save lives and protect livelihoods in emergencies; support food security and nutrition and (re)build livelihoods in fragile settings; reduce risk and enable people, communities, and countries to meet their own food and nutrition needs; and reduce under nutrition and break the intergenerational cycle of hunger. The organization was founded in 1960 and is based in Rome, Italy. World Food Program operates as a subsidiary of United Nations.

WFP was established in 1961 after the 1960 Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Conference, when George McGovern, director of the US Food for Peace Programmes, proposed establishing a multilateral food aid programme. WFP launched its first programmes in 1963 by the FAO and the United Nations General Assembly on a three-year experimental basis, supporting the Nubian population at Wadi Halfa in Sudan.
