VIENNA, VA — Vienna-based Langley Residential Support Services, a nonprofit serving adults with developmental disabilities, has named a new executive director.
Langley Residential's board hired Maureen K. Gum as executive director after she served as interim executive director. The last executive director died in March 2021, leading the board to conduct a search. The board will search for a program manager position after the appointment of Gum to executive director.
"Maureen has provided steady and thoughtful leadership since assuming the interim executive director role," Ken Cahoon, chair of the LRSS board of directors, said in a statement. "She rose to the top as the highest-qualified candidate and brings a wealth of knowledge and understanding of the complexities of working in the developmental disabilities field."
Langley Residential provides residential and care programs for adults with developmental disabilities in Fairfax County. This includes five group homes and drop-in services that adults can use while living in their own homes or family homes.
"It is an honor to have the confidence of our community to be charged with carrying on Langley’s tradition of excellent care and services in a family-like environment," said Gum. "I wholeheartedly believe in our mission of ensuring the people we serve have every opportunity to live rich, full lives."
Gum joined Langley Residential in 2007 as the director of residential services, overseeing its residential program and directing services for half the participants in the community support program. She previously worked at The Arc of York County, Catholic Charities, and Hoffman Homes, developing experience working with youth and families on mental health and behavioral issues.
Gum is credited with helping Langley Residential work with potential residents and program participants who rely on Medicaid waivers and will continue to look for other ways to help potential waiver participants. She completed Leadership Fairfax’s ELI and LFI programs in 2009 and 2013, respectively, and is a certified instructor in a variety of workplace trainings, including CPR and First Aid instruction to Human Rights, MANDT for safe and healthy work environments and more. She has also represented Langley Residential in other local organizations, serving on the Fairfax County Community Services Board Service Delivery Oversight Committee, the Northern Virginia Coalition of Service Providers’ peer-to-peer CEO-Executive Director Group, and the Virginia Network of Private Providers.
Originally from Maryland, Gum moved to Herndon 14 years ago. She has two children, and her husband works with the special education students at Fairfax County Public Schools.
