THE WELL

The WELL is an online community that provides email, shell accounts, and web pages for its users. Its service was recently purchased to be run by a group of its own long term active members. The discussion and topics on it ranges from deeply serious to trivial, depending on the nature and interests of the participants. Its first computer and modem rack were physically located in Sausalito, California, near the houseboat harbor. The community has won Dvorak and Webby Awards, inspired songs and novels, and almost invisibly influences modern culture. The WELL was launched in 1985 in association with the Whole Earth Review.
